Audie the Angel

Something inside of me just said, “I’ve worked too dang hard on that book, and I’m not going to let my daughter see me give up on my dream. Ever.” What kind of a mom would I be if I did?

I truly think it takes a village, of sorts, to produce a good book. I’m too close to my own work to see potential problems. Most authors are. I don’t think it’s possible to effectively self-edit your own work.

I decided that a weak point of most writers is that first chapter, in getting readers engaged right off the bat. So I wrote the first chapter for a number of different stories, to see which ones earned the right to have a chapter 2.

I began writing before self-publishing was a viable option, so it took awhile for me to take the leap. But I still have manuscripts on submission (via my agent) with traditional houses. Ideally, I’d like to be a hybrid author. I think it will provide the best exposure for my various projects.

But I believe, despite this democratization of publishing, the reader is the one we must put our trust in and believe their discerning taste will ultimately separate the wheat from the chaff.

Yes there are awful self-pubbed/indie-pubbed books. Yes it’s harder to do the weeding yourself, but you know what? I would rather sit there and read terrible book after terrible book than to have somebody tell me what I’ll like and won’t like based off of some archaic formula that’s been around, unchanged, for decades. This so-called “slush-pile” has come out with phenomenal books that would never have seen the light of day were it up to traditional publishers.

Connect and network with other authors early on. Listen, learn, share, and commiserate. There are a lot of great communities and forums for authors on LinkedIn and Facebook. Also, check out IndiesUnlimited.com. The guy who started that this is really cool and devastatingly handsome. (ahem)
