I want to bring awareness to invisible disabilities, to showcase that we are capable of adapting to unpredictable circumstances and that we can thrive in unlikely situations.

The Back Flap

In a world reshaped by an airborne virus that turns the infected into something no longer human, survival depends on what you can see… and what you can’t.

Former scientist Cecelia Abbott lives with an incurable neurological condition that distorts everything she sees, making it impossible to perceive the very virus that destroyed the world. She is the sworn guardian of Mei, a deaf child she is determined to protect, and the two are forced into a dangerous journey on foot across a post apocalyptic landscape overrun by zombies.

While searching for safety, they encounter a small civilization of survivors offering temporary refuge from the virus-ravaged hellscape. However, when Cecelia realizes that some members may be connected to Mei’s page, she faces an impossible decision: reveal the truth and risk everything or stay silent and protect the fragile safety they’ve created.

In a world where perception means life or death, seeing clearly is no longer simple and trust may be the most dangerous risk of all.

About the book

What is the book about?

The novel is centered around disability representation with a visually impaired protagonist and a hard-of-hearing side character who navigate a post-apocalyptic world.

When did you start writing the book?

Back in May of 2025.

How long did it take you to write it?

Roughly 9 months.

Where did you get the idea from?

I was inspired by my own struggles; I suffer from the same neurological condition that causes visual impairment which my protagonist has, I wanted to portray an accurate representation of the physical, mental and emotional struggles that come with an invisible disability.

Were there any parts of the book where you struggled?

No, most of the writing process came naturally to me.

What came easily?

The plot. I had a definitive idea of what I wanted to achieve with this specific novel and the natural sequence of events that followed.

Are your characters entirely fictitious or have you borrowed from real world people you know?

They’re entirely fictitious; there was no intentional portrayal of one specific, real person in my novel.

Do you have a target reader?

My target audience is disability representation in fiction writing; I want to bring awareness to invisible disabilities, to showcase that we are capable of adapting to unpredictable circumstances and that we can thrive in unlikely situations.

About Writing

Do you have a writing process? If so can you please describe it?

The writing process is methodical; I spend time analyzing and detailing events to achieve what I wish to accomplish.

Do you outline? If so, do you do so extensively or just chapter headings and a couple of sentences?

I outline my novels extensively, everything is well-thought and organized before I begin the writing process.

Do you edit as you go or wait until you’ve finished?

Editing begins once the writing process is completed and finished, I do not edit as I go.

About Publishing

Did you submit your work to Agents?

No, I did not submit my work to agents.

What made you decide to go Indie, whether self-publishing or with an indie publisher? Was it a particular event or a gradual process?

It was a gradual process; I realized that self-publishing was better suited for my novel as it allowed me more creative freedom.

Did you get your book cover professionally done or did you do it yourself?

I created the cover on my own.

Do you have a marketing plan for the book or are you just winging it?

My marketing plan is detailed and involves various strategies such as listings, reviews/interviews, blogs, social media, etc., to expand my reach across the indie author communities.

Any advice that you would like to give to other newbies considering becoming Indie authors?

Don’t give up when things start to get hard; what you’ve already accomplished is far greater than you’ll ever realize.

About You

What would you like readers to know about you?

My name is P.R.L., and I’m a neurodivergent writer with a neurological condition that causes visual impairment and auditory processing differences.

What are you working on now?

At this point, I am currently working on a few different projects that will subsequently follow the release of my novel.
