About the book
What is the book about?
Wrapped in Grace is a devotional that weaves devotions and poetry to show how God’s grace is displayed in everyday life for everyday people. I don’t think it is a typical devotional, and several people have told me that as well. The stories that begin each devotion invite readers to experience God’s unmerited favor in every aspect of their lives. Whether dealing with spilled coffee, stubborn stumps, or storm warnings, God has a message that can speak hope and life into harried hearts.
When did you start writing the book?
I began a blog in 2018, and the book evolved from there. It’s hard to put a starting date on the writing because I pulled experiences from years of life to write the devotions in the book. I think I began gathering the content in 2024, and I wondered what I was going to do with it. I had a stack of pages with no format and no plan.
How long did it take you to write it?
Once I had a plan, the book came together quickly. I had a lot of content, and the problem became what to put in and what to leave out. Formatting and editing were also issues I had to address. Additional writing to fill in gaps occurred. I couldn’t work on it full time, so all in all, it took about a year.
Where did you get the idea from?
I struggled with how to put the content together until I wrote the title poem, “Wrapped in Grace”. Our family experienced some major hardships through the years that much of the content of the book was written. One morning, I walked into my daughter’s home, and my four-year-old granddaughter was walking down the hall wrapped head-to-toe in her blanket. It was trailing behind her like a train. It seemed like God spoke to my heart and said, “That is how I have carried you through these times – wrapped in My grace”. I went back home, sat down at the computer and wrote the title poem, “Wrapped in Grace”. After that, the book seemed to come together, organized around everyday grace, seasons of grace, and saving grace.
Were there any parts of the book where you struggled?
The placement of the poetry was a bit of struggle. I wanted them to be perfect – not too many or too few, and perfectly matched to the topics. Nothing is perfect.
I agonized over them somewhat.
What came easily?
The prayers for each devotion were the easiest part of the writing, because I wrote what I prayed based on the scripture and writing. They are real prayers.
We all know how important it is for writers to read. Are there any particular authors that have influenced how you write and, if so, how have they influenced you?
Jan Karon is a favorite. Her stories capture everyday living in such a graceful way that I feel that I am living with the characters. Max Lucado caught me early on with his phrasing and word choice. Charles Martin’s books entertain and make me think. I am not the same after I read them.
Do you have a target reader?
Wrapped in Grace is written for anyone who needs grace, and I believe we all do. It is an accessible read, not a commentary or a Bible Study book, although I believe it will make you search out some things in your Bible. There are certainly scriptures and truth there. It is a book to encourage and lift up, to offer hope. I have had just as many positive comments from men as from women, so I believe it has a universal appeal, even though there is a woman on the cover.
About Writing
Do you have a writing process? If so can you please describe it?
My days are terribly disjointed, and I write when I can, so I get words down while I have a minute. I am always writing notes no matter where I am or what I am doing. When I get to the computer, I pray and I use those notes to begin putting things together. It may be an essay or a poem, a devotion, a blog post, or an article. I normally have multiple projects that I am working on at one time. I go back and forth between them. I’m not sure I can call this a process.
Do you outline? If so, do you do so extensively or just chapter headings and a couple of sentences?
I know how to outline, but I don’t outline when I am writing, unless I am stuck – badly stuck. If I am that badly stuck, I usually put the writing away and work on something else until I can come back with a clearer mind.
The exception is when I am writing a teaching guide. I do outline those for clarity’s sake.
Do you edit as you go or wait until you’ve finished?
I edit heavily as I go, and then I go back and edit again. I try to let my work sit and edit again before I send it off or post it.
Do you listen to music while you write? If yes, what gets the fingers tapping?
I work in silence. I am too tuned in to music to listen while I write. It distracts me.
About Publishing
Did you submit your work to Agents?
I have not.
What made you decide to go Indie, whether self-publishing or with an indie publisher? Was it a particular event or a gradual process?
I met an Independent Publisher who liked my work and wanted to see it.
Did you get your book cover professionally done or did you do it yourself?
My publisher created the cover.
Do you have a marketing plan for the book or are you just winging it?
I am learning as I go. I have a publicist, who is a great help and a very supportive publisher.
Any advice that you would like to give to other newbies considering becoming Indie authors?
Don’t be afraid to talk about and show your work. I hid mine for a long time before I began to share it with others.
About You
Where did you grow up?
I grew up in the panhandle of Florida, not on the beach, but close enough that when the wind is just right, I can smell the salt marshes.
Where do you live now?
I live about fifteen miles closer to the coast than I did when I was growing up. I have moved all over the Southeast, but I’m right back where I started.
What would you like readers to know about you?
God’s grace is not just something I write about, it is the foundation of my life. I am a wife, mother, and grandmother. I depend on God’s grace every day.
What are you working on now?
My next book, How Christmas Came, a child’s story of Christmas will be released in the fall. It is a beautifully illustrated rhyming book that will be a delight for Christmas. Katherine Hutchinson-Hays is the illustrator.
