IndieView with Julie Ryan McGue, author of Twice a Daughter

My love of the who-dun-it influenced how I presented my story. Like so many of Agatha Christie’s novels, my main character has a problem to solve, and she must go to great lengths to unravel the clues. I wanted my book to read like fiction, to function like a detective story, but to hold the elements of reflection which are fundamental to memoir.

IndieView with Elizabeth Roper Marcus, author of Don’t Say a Word

The meaning of my parents’ strange about-face was the hardest puzzle I’ve ever tried to solve. I could only do it after both had died. I had to work to view them as complex human beings, not through the lens of their being my parents, in order to see what was actually staring me in the face.

IndieView with E.F. Schraeder, author of Liar: Memoir of a Haunting

Rainey’s self-awareness and attraction to the genre was an engaging undercurrent to explore in Liar. That backdrop created a space for the book to acknowledge hauntings, horror, and related themes in that way made her a fun character to develop.

IndieView with J.A. Curtis, author of Lies of the Haven

The actual idea, or at least the opening chapter, came from a dream I had about a dragon that was chasing me through my grandparent’s house, requiring me to rush through the house and shut off all the lights, because you know someone would get mad at me if I left the house with all the lights on …

IndieView with Lynda Faye Schmidt, author of The Healing

I knew I wanted to write a novel to share my insights with others, I just didn’t know what shape my story would take until years later.

IndieView with Anita D. Russell, author of Cultivating Change from the Inside Out

My younger daughter who had just given birth to her first child in March 2020 asked if I thought her son would have to protest in his lifetime as well. I started writing the book in response to that question.

IndieView with Christie Leigh Babirad, author of Sapphire Stars: Poems

I like the idea that just like a music record/cd, a poetry book all your own is like tracks of music aligned to convey a certain theme, message, or feeling.

IndieView with Konstantina Kailliontzi, author of The One

Always be original when you write. That’s how you will shine bright in the end. After all, you can’t write a good book when you’re trying to imitate someone else’s writing.
