IndieView with Golden November, author of The Characters of Milestoneville

My books have a sitcom-drama element to them. If the reader only likes a traditional book format, my books might feel different at first. However, once they get into character and find the flow of the book, they can’t put it down.

IndieView with Vicki Cody, author of Fly Safe

Once I got the rhythm of my chapters; narrative, a letter, and a journal entry the story unfolded so easily. So many times, while writing it, I had a sense that this story had been there just waiting for me to write it.

IndieView with Cheryl Grey Bostrom, author of Sugar Birds

Though I had laid out the bounds of the story in advance, the characters told me who they were and what they were going to do as I sat with my yellow pad and laptop.

IndieView with Jane Elizabeth Hughes, author of The Long-Lost Jules

I want to write books that I would love to read – books with strong, complicated characters, twisty plots, and a nice tinge of romance. I want to guide my readers to my imagined world, where they don’t have to think about picking kids up from school or getting the laundry done. I want them to immerse themselves, laugh out loud, gasp out loud, smile, frown, and finally to remember the book with a sigh of pure pleasure.

IndieView with John Etterlee, author of The Messenger

I get an idea in my head and run with it. My best writing tends to come out that way.

IndieView with Janet Luongo, author of Rebellion, 1967: A Memoir

I struggled with how much to reveal of intimate moments, of impulsive moments that led to problems, which felt like mistakes. I tried not to explain, analyze or judge – myself or others – but simply tell the truth.

IndieView with Robin Murarka, author of Rone Isa

I write as a reader, and I get bored quickly as a reader. Accordingly, everything I write is lean, creative and purposeful so as to maximize stimulation.

IndieView with Susan Schoenberger, author of The Liability of Love

I don’t know of any writer who can claim a character is entirely fictitious. They have to be born out of your experience in some way, but I’ve learned from other writers to think of it like a blender. For each character, you throw in about a third of yourself, about a third of someone you know, and about a third specific characteristics that make the person come alive. Pulse until combined.

IndieView with John L. Thompson, author of Truck Stop

You have to allow your characters to speak, to tell you their story. You have to believe they live and to give them a chance at living. Continue reading

IndieView with AMS Golden, author of Conversations from the Left, Right, & Heart

The idea spawned from my ranting about how I wish “my rational left brain could just shut-up my emotional right brain so I could stop ‘trying’ for the 800th time like it would really make a difference”.
