When it comes to influence, though, the biggest of all is my father. He isn’t a writer, but he took me to the local library every week as a child. He encouraged me to stretch myself when it came to reading material. He introduced me to genres and authors I’d never otherwise have entertained. Yeah, it’s all his fault. I’ll need to have a word

I’ve got five days to make the book discoverable to US audiences (and more folks in the UK, Canada, New Zealand, and everywhere else Amazon can reach) by giving it away, and I started building my campaign to advertise the free promo two months in advance.

Don’t be shy about your book. Show it to anyone who will give you feedback, and be prepared for criticism. It’s important to know when to take advice to heart and when to shrug and say, “oh well, can’t please everyone!”

I often tell people that it feels to me like the characters in my story tell me their stories and I just sort of transcribe them. So, there have been times I am surprised to find out how a chapter has ended or what happens to a character, and I hope the readers are as well.

You need a network. Don’t do this alone. Find other authors, observe them, listen to them when they impart their wisdom and experience, take advantage of the resources, and remember that no matter what happens, the entire process is a joy ride! You’re on a journey, and having a learning experience. Enjoy it!

For the love of Tom Cruise, please find a good editor. Sure, you can walk out your front door naked, but you’d be showing the world those bits best left to mystery. To further this analogy: Be patient. Just because you don’t have the time or money for clothes, does not mean it’s okay to leave your house in your birthday suit. The police (also known as readers) will call you on it, then you’ll have a record, a reputation that could keep you from your dream job. Mind your Ps and Qs, literally, and remember, you cannot edit your own work. I don’t care who you are.

I think indie authors will eventually rule the world! The entire business of indie publishing is still in infancy stages, and no one really knows where it’s all going, but I believe it’s going to be phenomenal.

I borrowed from the most basic issue so many of us face in our lives–divorce and the consequences on the family of a broken home. This is an issue so many of us can relate to in our own lives.
