IndieView with Shirley Reva Vernick, author of Ripped Away

I consume history all the time because I love it. I’m talking books, podcasts, articles, blogs, and more. I learned about the Ripper-inspired anti-Semitism by going down one of my many rabbit holes of historical inquiry.

IndieView with Brianna da Silva, author of City of Reckoning

A major source of inspiration did come from a few of my more recent experiences in political activism, where I observed some of the disturbing effects that can come from trauma when it is not processed in a healthy way. I saw some people openly funneling their rage and trauma into their own radicalization, and I saw how that distorted their view of the world, and of their role as activists.

IndieView with Toby Deutchman, author of The Polka Dot Pants of Sir Edward McGee

I’ve always loved books with humor and books that reassured children that they should believe in themselves. Those two elements coalesced as I thought of the story.

IndieView with Catherine Gentile, author of Sunday’s Orphan

I discovered how absorbing research is for me, and how much it informed my work. I also discovered that all I needed to say was, “I’m writing a novel…” and people were more than ready to share their knowledge and experiences; all I did was show interest in their lives and they were more than happy to sit down for a long chat.

IndieView with Lea Falls, author of Goddess of Limbo

Elizabeth Gilbert talks about book ideas like they’re these spirits of muses that come to writers, insisting to be born. I like that idea. I also think stories reflect paths our collective unconscious has taken. Sure, it’s all fiction, but in a way, it’s also all true. We find ourselves in characters, in their struggles, in their lessons. I wouldn’t claim all that magic stems from my imagination alone.

IndieView with Sean Campbell, coauthor of The Grifter

I wanted to write an accurate, interesting fraud story that portrayed both halves of the story. That morphed into the revenge story as the victim became more and more prominent.

IndieView with Emily Gallo, author of DREAMer

I like to write about misfits, people living on the margin – quirky characters with interesting back stories.

IndieView with Trey Everett, author of Beneath The Surface

If you have the story that is eating away at you, put those words on paper. You’ll never regret doing it.

IndieView with John Eklund, author of Siegfried: The Liberator of Germainia

The story of Arminius, in my opinion, is similar to the movie Braveheart, only with a better plot and more satisfying ending. I took great pleasure in incorporating aspects of the Siegfried myth in the retelling of the historical battle of the Teutoburg Wald.

IndieView with Abigail Wilkes, author of Seconds

They are entirely fictitious, but I think each of them could represent someone everyone knows. The judgmental older sister, the protect-your-family-at-any-cost Father, the anxious nine-teen year old, the socially awkward outcast, and the person constantly struggling to make the right choice. On a side note, I have written another book where my whole family gets involved. Don’t tell them!
