There are LOTS of good stories that publishers reject (and I vehemently disagree with their rejection). They deserve a voice, and their story deserves to be heard. Honestly, I’ve read and reviewed books from indies and from trad published authors and I’m surprised at what gets accepted versus what gets rejected.

A major source of inspiration did come from a few of my more recent experiences in political activism, where I observed some of the disturbing effects that can come from trauma when it is not processed in a healthy way. I saw some people openly funneling their rage and trauma into their own radicalization, and I saw how that distorted their view of the world, and of their role as activists.

I discovered how absorbing research is for me, and how much it informed my work. I also discovered that all I needed to say was, “I’m writing a novel…” and people were more than ready to share their knowledge and experiences; all I did was show interest in their lives and they were more than happy to sit down for a long chat.

Elizabeth Gilbert talks about book ideas like they’re these spirits of muses that come to writers, insisting to be born. I like that idea. I also think stories reflect paths our collective unconscious has taken. Sure, it’s all fiction, but in a way, it’s also all true. We find ourselves in characters, in their struggles, in their lessons. I wouldn’t claim all that magic stems from my imagination alone.
